New Study Finds That Almost Half of Older Adults Die With a Dementia Diagnosis

Main
Nearly 1 in 2 older adults now die with a diagnosis of dementia listed on their medical record, a 36 percent rise from two decades ago. The research, published April 1 in JAMA Health Forum, found the greatest increases in dementia diagnoses in hospice, inpatient, and home health settings. However, the increase may be the consequence of more detailed medical records, Medicare billing rules, and an increase in public awareness around dementia rather than an actual rise in the prevalence of dementia, according to researchers. Those changes could provide the opportunity for more older adults to talk in advance with their families and healthcare providers about the kind of care they want at the end of life if they do develop Alzheimer’s disease or another form of cognitive decline, the authors note.Although…

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging gay and bisexual men who live in Florida or plan to travel in the state to get inoculated against meningococcal disease in response to an outbreak.“There is a large, ongoing outbreak of meningococcal disease in Florida, primarily among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men, including those living with HIV,” the CDC said in a statement. Additional cases have been reported in the state, including multiple cases in college students, that don’t appear related to this ongoing outbreak, the CDC said.“Florida’s increase in meningococcal disease cases is mostly affecting people who live in Florida but has also affected some people who have traveled to Florida,” the CDC added.State public health officials announced an investigation of a cluster of…

Many Older People With Rheumatoid Arthritis Are Undermedicated

Main
If you are over the age of 65 and have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), your physician may not be treating you as aggressively as recommended by American College of Rheumatology (ACR). Updated in 2021, the guidelines endorse early treatment with DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs), medications that help decrease pain and prevent joint damage. However, a study published in ACR Open Rheumatology in January 2022, conducted by researchers at University of Michigan (UofM) Medicine, found that older people were receiving this treatment in far fewer numbers than younger people who had RA.Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive disease; early, aggressive treatment can reduce symptoms such as fatigue and prevent irreversible joint damage. Are DMARDs Underused in Older Adults? The research team used the National Ambulatory Medical Care survey to analyze almost eight million ambulatory…

Do Motivational Talks Improve Weight Loss Efforts?

Do Motivational Talks Improve Weight Loss Efforts?

Main
Contrary to what you might expect, boosting motivation and confidence in one’s own abilities doesn’t appear to make a difference when it comes to weight loss efforts.A recent analysis, published March 29 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that when healthcare providers engaged in motivational interviewing (MI) with patients as part of a weight-loss program, it added little to no benefit. On average, those people lost no more weight than people getting other types of help.“I’m somewhat surprised by these results,” says Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, associate professor and obesity medicine physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Stanford was not involved in the review. “I feel like if you asked my patients if they have issues with motivation, there are a sizeable…

‘No Antibiotics’ Labels on Beef May Not Always Be Accurate

Main
If you’re spending extra money on beef raised without antibiotics, you may not be getting what you pay for. A new analysis found that 15 percent of cattle raised and slaughtered for the “Raised Without Antibiotics” marketplace tested positive for at least one antibiotic.“‘Raised Without Antibiotics’ [RWA] and related claims are absolute, meaning antibiotics should never have been administered to the animals intended for the RWA market,” says Laura Rogers, the deputy director of the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC, and a coauthor of the study, published April 7 in Science. “This is disappointing to say the least. This is an important label claim, and consumers should have confidence in it,” she says.Overuse of Antibiotics Is…
