Old Europe Cheese Recalls Brie and Camembert Cheese Due to Potential Listeria Risk
On September 30, 2020, Old Europe Cheese of Benton Harbor, Michigan, issued a voluntary recall of its Brie and Camembert cheeses because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause listeriosis, a serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating an outbreak of listeria that has hospitalized five people so far; those sickened were in California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and Texas.
